Artist Statement
For my project, I choose to look at the moral and political issue of the Stop and Frisk policy. My perspective on this issue is the following: The policy racially targets minorities and even though some people think it heightens our security, in the end it actually harms the safety of our security. In my poster I used pathos, logos and ethos. Pathos is shown through the title and the visual part where the policeman is burning the minority’s rights and amendments. I used ethos when I quoted John Rawls and I used logos where there is a statistic of the percentage of Hispanic, Black and White people being stopped. I colored only the skin of both my men to show the racial aspect of my perspective. I also colored the fire and burned the amendment paper to intensify the pathos aspect of my perspective. I placed a spotlight over the minority being stopped and had other obviously white people (business men) walking past to signify the racial targeting as well. I covered my title in flames to also signify that the way in which police handle this policy is unjust and unmoral and they are basically burning the rights of the people they pull over based on how they interact with them. I also highlighted specific words in red to show the importance of those words.
The overall tone of my visual piece is that of inequality. By using many of the details that I did, I made sure that the racial profiling and unjust way these policies are being handled are acknowledged.
As far as the artistic part of my poster, I chose to hand draw my two main men. I shaded blue around the spotlight to nicely connect the people who are walking past. I added the burnt book page of the amendments to show people what the actual amendments state but more importantly, I used the burnt book page to make my visual more interesting. If I did not have the burnt book page, the text on my poster would be overwhelming so integrating that made it look more aesthetically pleasing and also made it interesting and attention grabbing. Overall I think my poster turned out to be aesthetically pleasing and well put together. I think it nicely compliments my Op-Ed. I am very happy with the way that it turned out and I am proud of both my visual and my Op-Ed.
